Vision or plan for entrepreneurship education

The school carries out programs called „Economy Everyday”, Entrepreneurship” and “The Entrepreneurship Club”. In these programs a great deal of students participate within hours when the counselors are available and during after school hours.

The main purpose of the program is to prepare the student to actively enter life from an economic aspect, pave ones own road to development, consciously develop ones career, learn about time management, and develop ones strong sides

Main points of the program:

1. prepare to be active on the job market

2. financial education – conscious management of finances

3. cooperation with others 4. future planning – career orientation

4. economical education

While students prepare to enter and exist on the job market they learn how to present themselves and their achievements during interviews; how to write a CV, and how to write a letter of intent. They get to know and plan how sole proprietorships should work. They become familiar with law and employees’ responsibilities (including adolescent employees), flexible forms of employment and flexible ways of organizing ones time. They become familiar with factors which make up the so called grey area.

Young participants who take part in the program learn how to not only manage personal finances but also family budgets. Students learn about forms of how to save, ways to invest, become familiar with bank offers, and secure ways of using electronic banking. In addition, they learn how to judge consequences of taking a risk.

Students taking part in the program do things which allow them to gain experience in working effectively in a team, deciding on and realizing own initiatives, checking oneself, creating ones image. Students learn about the basic principals of building interpersonal relations, describe their strong points and predispositions, and discover opportunities of how to apply their own skills.

During lessons the students are introduced to the job world, so to help them choose a school after junior high, based on their strong and weak points; help them pave their own learning path and career, plan different ways of how to develop their own skills, acquire knowledge, and learn about time management.

During realization of the program there are competitions checking their level of economic knowledge and deepening acquired knowledge and skills.

Resources to encourage and support entrepreneurship education

Support for entrepreneurship education takes place by:

- jointly organizing and supporting workshops for teachers realizing the economical programs

- material support from the school board concerning materials needed for students during entrepreneurship programs or active method programs.

Focus on student centred learning, integration in different subjects

Practical entrepreneurship lessons take part mainly when counselors are available; extracurricular lessons like for example entrepreneurship workshops. In addition, the subjects are realized during social studies (subjects connected with the job market, sole proprietorships), mathematics (money management). Active methods of teaching are implemented. Many subjects are carried out within the scope of lessons conducted by pedagogues regarding getting familiar with their strong sides, future planning, choosing a school, paving a career path.

While realizing these actions local bank representatives and local businessmen are involved. In a lot of tasks parents are also engaged. Outside partners are engaged during for example the realization of student projects, activities connected with planning for the future (choosing a career) or during realization of topics connected with forms of saving, investing.

Evaluation of entrepreneurship education and learning and by whom

Evaluation in school takes place by surveys, presentation of students work, engagement and success of students in contests (under the supervision of teachers carrying out the program in school). In addition, the school took part in an outside evaluation conducted by Junior Achievement Poland (FMP) (the surveys pertained to not only students but also teachers, relaxed meetings)

Additional comments

Realization of entrepreneurship education is much needed on the junior high level. The students eagerly take part in such classes, because they strengthen their self-esteem, teaches them good communication methods and team work. In addition, it introduces them to the economic field and teaches them about finances.

Nevertheless, there are many organizational factors involved in order for this to be realized on a good level. In junior high schools there is a huge problem with extra hours - usually the extra time the teachers have is not enough. They often have to deal with other matters and other educational programs. However, during other classes the teacher has to abide by the standard educational program regarding a certain subject, and economical topics often exceed the standard program. Moreover, the limited amount of time available does not allow the teachers to introduce the topics as something extra. Ideally it would be best to introduce it as a separate subject – entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, in this field the board has restrictions because of financial matters.

The best way of introducing economical topics are workshops for students (for example field trips) or the realization of topics during class camps. There is a huge motivation to act in the field of entrepreneurship education through participation in projects and competitions, where students can present their creativeness, check their knowledge and skills referring to equivalent successes.
